According to Alice Willard-Michaels, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Parkview's Diabetes Education Program was first recognized for excellence in 2001. The program delivers lifestyle classes to people diagnosed with diabetes.
The national award certifies that Parkview's healthcare trainings meet or exceed the national standards for diabetes self-management education.
“Our diabetes education program was singled out because of the quality of our curriculum and our well-trained staff,” said the program coordinator.
“Self-management is an essential component of diabetes treatment,” she said. “By adhering to rigorous outcome standards, we can help our community of people with diabetes reduce the need for hospitalization.”
Diabetes education covers topics such as the disease process, good nutrition, physical activity, medications, blood glucose monitoring, prevention of acute and chronic complications, spiritual and psychological impact, goal setting and problem solving.
